What I Am: 200th Post

Guess what, people!  THIS IS MY 200th POST!!  Woop woop!

After sharing here for almost seven years, thinking of how to recognize this milestone was a bit difficult.  I've made every list in the book at this point, including the recapping each year on my BLOGline (check it out if you haven't yet).  However, I wanted to make this point special in its own right, so I enlisted the opinions of a few of my fellow blogger friends.

Then I came across this post by Kaelene at Unlocking Kiki and it inspired me to think about what I am as a blogger, and what I am not.  For one, I am not a "Magical Blogger," by any stretch of the imagination.  And really, I agree with everything Kiki listed on her post, but in the interest of avoiding plagiarism, I created my own lists, as featured below.

Original photo by Katie H. Photography
What I'm Not
- perfect // I don't know everything about HTML, my graphic skills are (mostly) self taught, my stories are never concise yet always personal, I rarely schedule posts, and I don't always share the bad and ugly with the good or pretty.
- popular // I don't have hundreds, or even tens of followers, I haven't been nominated for awards, and I'm fairly certain others don't share my page with their blogger bffs.
- performer // My primary goal is not entertainment; I don't search out sponsors or offer solicited giveaways, I'm not going to show off the latest gadget or advertise products to gain followers.  I won't be doing back flips to hold anybody's attention just for the heck of it.
- photographer // I don't have a "fancy" camera, I'm not classically (or self) trained, and my blog is never going to be considered a work of ark.

What I Am
- me // I am Lauren.  I grew up in south Louisiana and am extremely proud of my Cajun roots.  I'm married and enjoy time with my husband as we navigate life together.
- average // Sometimes I execute creative or interesting outings; most of the time I don't.  Sometimes I travel to new states or fun destinations; most of the time I don't.  Sometimes I experience something really interesting or fun at work; 99.985% of the time I don't.
- busy // I work outside of the home (including lots of in-state travel), my husband travels for work on and off 8 months out of the year, neither of us live near our families or friends, and sometimes posting on the blog can be on the bottom of the to-do list.
- interested // I want to learn from the best of the best - how can I be a better wife and friend? Are there new hobbies I could learn, ways to be happier or healthier, more efficient, or frugal?  There are kind, generous, amazing bloggers out there, and I want to meet them...become friends with them...learn from them...become a better person because of them.

They say a blog should be the kind you enjoy reading, and the honest to goodness truth is that I enjoy reading blogs written by real people - people who share the exciting and the mundane.  People who write about throwing together dinner, watching television, discovering life hacks, and spending time with those they love.  It's like unscripted reality television (however boring that may sometimes appear)...

That's the way I like it.  And, (I think) that's the way it will stay!

So, if you're new here, leave a comment introducing yourself.  Tell me who you are as a blogger (and, if you like, who you're not).  What inspires you to blog, and what do you enjoy (or dislike) reading in other blogs?

#s 1-5: Blog Category

Now that it's practically February (who am I kidding, this will be posted in February, even though I'm writing it before then), I really need to get my butt in gear on recapping my 20 in 14 list.  I think it will evolve into a couple of posts that lump some items together by category - because, let's face it, I can't write an entire post about how often I posted last year.  Still, I fear these posts will prove mostly boring, so I hope to spread them out a little, with some fun stuff thrown in the mix.

-

I'm definitely a sequential person, so of course I'll be starting with the first category on the list: Blog.

For those who are new here, here's a snapshot of the Blog category.

Blog
1. Write an average of 1x/week (or more!).
2. Practice telling my story in fewer words.
3. Use a real camera (not my phone) more often.
4. Increase readership.
5. Learn more about the bigger picture of blogging.

So, how did I do?  Not too terribly...I don't think anyway.

1. Write an average of 1x/week (or more!).  I actually thought accomplishing this goal would be much more of a stretch than it turned out to be.  Realistically, I thought I would end up with somewhere around 40 posts for the year, but somehow I managed to publish 56 posts.  To be quite honest, I'm pretty proud of myself for that one; in the end, I published more posts in 2014 than any previous year, including my inaugural year (2008).  I think that's pretty great!

2. Practice telling my story in fewer words.  Well, I didn't necessarily ace this one, but I do think I improved in this department.  Throwing more pictures (see #3) into the mix, helped to make things a little more visually appealing, but I probably should have reigned in the word count every once in a while.  Honestly, using lots of words is just who I am.  I'm a girl, girls talk a lot...it's just how life works.  So I'm still a work in progress here.

3. Use a real camera (not my phone) more often.  As it turned out, I ended up having to spend three months using the dumbest phone on the planet, which means my access to a camera phone greatly diminished for a significant period of time.  One would have thought this would do wonders for tackling Goal #3, butttttttt it didn't.  Instead of taking better pictures, I ended up with no pictures (or photos taken on my husband's phone and then sent to myself, lol).   The fact of the matter is that camera phones are just so much faster and more efficient...and taking photos with "real" cameras in public can really draw quite a bit of nerd-like attention to yourself.  I always feel awkward and tourist-y pulling out the digital camera.  In other words, I didn't do so hot on this one.

4. Increase readership.  I don't know how much extra foot traffic I'm getting around here (sometimes more than others, anyway), but I do feel more connected to the blogging community than I ever have before.  I've been reading quite a few more blogs, and reaching out to others more often.  I will say that I have really enjoyed "meeting" others, especially you, Amy and Ace! ;)  If you're new here, leave a comment sometime so I know you've stopped by.  I'd love to meet you!

5.  Learn more about the bigger picture of blogging.  I wrote this goal after receiving a blogging book for Christmas; the book was quite interesting, but I didn't really end up focusing a whole lot of time on actively building my own blog like I thought I would.  It was nice to better understand the inter-workings of it all, but ultimately I want to do this for me, and blogging for "the man" really wouldn't be very fun or authentic.  I still find "bigger picture" to be quite interesting, but I think I'll be staying true to myself rather than making an effort to be someone or something I'm not.

Bonus:  While on the subject, I should also note that the blog underwent a major facelift in 2014.  We went from "Breaking the Mold" to "Here We Geaux," and the entire design/color scheme changed, as well.  (And in case, you were lost in the shuffle, Follow my blog with Bloglovin.)  The changes made things a little fresher around here, and better reflect who I am and what this project has become.  :)

So of course I should be eating words here, per #2, but it is what it is!  Stay tuned, more updates will be coming your way...eventually.  ;)

7 Quick Takes (Vol. 9)

Rename and Redesign.  Remember that redesign I promised about eight months ago?  Yeah well, this week it became reality.  Breaking the Mold is now officially Here We Geaux and I couldn't be more excited.  Just as we grow and change over time, I think it's natural for blogs to do the same.  When I started Breaking the Mold six and a half years ago, I was at a stage where I wanted to get out and see the world, something atypical of those from my hometown.  These days, I'm not so set on "breaking molds" as I am trying to find my place in the world as a wife and young professional.  I do still have a few components to update, but hopefully everything will be transitioned very soon!  With that being said, please "geaux" along with me as I share the characters in my virtual story.  Note:  Be sure to head over to Bloglovin' to follow the new web address!

ICYMI:  #20 - Makeovers. With the renaming process, some of you may have missed my most recent post, a recap of my Bare Minerals makeover at the Mall of America.  Feel free to hop on over to check it out here.

Alex's 30th Birthday.  Apparently "birthday" evolved into Birthday Week, which further evolved into Birthday Month.  I can't wait to share an entire post of all the details from his big day!

See ya on December 1st.  On Wednesday afternoon (11/19), I left the office for the last time until December 1st.  WAHOOOOO.  With meetings on Thursday and Monday, plus an out of town trip on Friday, and a few days off for Thanksgiving, this girl gets 11 days away from the office and I couldn't be more thrilled.  Can I get an Amen, folks?

source

The Moos are invading.  In T-minus 3 days and counting, my extended family is coming to town for Thanksgiving.  About half of them have visited us in Monroe before, but it will be the first time for some.  Our family has never done Thanksgiving away from home, so this will be a first for us.  We are also taking in about four "strays," aka Alex's coworkers who are from out-of-state and have no family around to celebrate the holiday.  Alex and I are really looking forward to the gathering, and have decided it will be a big morale booster for us.  I'm hoping to snap a few pictures and compile a list of good stories to share with all of you afterwards.  :)

source
Recaps are coming.  With just 38 days left in 2014, I need to kick my booty in gear and start posting those updates for my 20 in 14 list.  Anyone wanna volunteer to send bi-weekly reminders about making this happen?  Someone...anyone...?

Hello from New Mexico.  The reason this is being posted on Sunday instead of Friday (as the link-up was designed) is because I am writing this from the press box at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.  Stay tuned for all the deets from this trip, including stories of some pretty harrowing travel issues.

And....the game just ended, so that's my cue!  Catch ya on the flipside.

7 Quick Takes (Vol. 7)

My health.  Lab results are in and...drum roll please...my prolactin levels are well within the normal rage!!!  As I understand it, normal levels are between 1-35 and at 4 weeks on Bromocriptine, my reading was 7.1!!  That's a 10th of where I was before starting the medicine!!!  Can I get a "Woop, woop!?"

...And the bittersweet part of that is having my first "normal" period in...gosh, a really long time!  Now I understand why women complain of aches and pains with their cycle, lol.  It's so strange to have "Aunt Flo" show up on exactly Day 30.  I don't think I've ever experienced that before! Here's to hoping things continue as they should and then maybe.........maybe (God willing) Baby B will be here sometime in 2015?!

Adoption.  Since writing about attending the adoption/foster care seminar, I spoke with a coworker who adopted a child about five years ago.  He and his wife went through a local adoption attorney and raved about that process.  He also made some good points about the difference in working with bio-families that are pursuing adoption voluntarily versus those whose children have been removed involuntarily.  It sounds like the attorney-route may be more suited to our interests, but we shall see.  Again, we're not ready to make any big decisions on this yet.

Friends.  It's been quiet here with Alex in Kentucky for the last 36 hours.  Times like this really make me miss having friends around.  It's kind of sad when we pause and think about how all we have is each other in this town (3.5 hour radius, really).  Sometimes we yearn for interaction with others...with people who just "get" us, and to have excuses for doing something fun every once in a while.  Wherever life takes us next, we are desperately praying for it to feel like home with a true sense of community and love for those around us.

Myself, Victoria, and Dawn - June 2014
In the works.  Life continues to evolve, and in the next few days we will be pursuing the possibility of a new opportunity for us.  I won't say much, but for the time being it involves a little bit of travel, and a great deal of gorging on some delicious food not available where we live.  Please continue to pray for peace and guidance as we look for God's prompting in our lives.

Minneapolis.  In about two weeks, I will be traveling to Minneapolis for a work conference.  With all the health issues I had over the last two months, I wasn't sure if I would be able to make the trip, but things have been better so it looks like everything's a 'go.' Other than having a layover at MSP, I haven't ever spent time in Minnesota, so I am excited for the trip.  Of course, being away from Alex for a week is never pleasant, but I'm counting on my far-away-friend Christy to make it well worth my time! ;-)  I can't wait to share photos when I return!

Peanut gallery?  I tried to be a good little wife by doing laundry and picking up the house while Alex was gone this weekend.  One of his jobs around here is to wash dishes, and I do not envy the boy one bit.  However, I decided to suck it up and scrub the George Foreman plates in an effort to help him out and let's just say I was ready to chunk the whole machine before it was all said and done.  The problem is that I am a germaphobe and hate getting close to raw meat, especially chicken.  Using the GF is the only way Alex likes to cook chicken (especially now that our meat thermometer is broken), but the residue is disgustinggggggggggggg.  So........anyone have suggestions for an alternative?  I'm not above chunking the dadgum machine and buying something new if it will mean less residue and impossible scrubbing efforts.  Lay it on me, folks!

This is the version we have.

Blog.  As promised, my new About page is up and running.  Have you checked it out yet?  (Yeah, I caught a few type-o's, so those will have to be fixed during the major overhaul I'm hoping to do...eventually.)

Ok...Alex will be back in an hour and a half (early, this week!!!), so I've really got to get supper in the oven and finish cleaning up the house!

That's all for now!

In the Works

It's been kind of quiet around here for the last week, and while I know all of you are worried about my absence (NOT), I assure you everything is fine on this end.  I will say that I worked an overnight camp all last weekend, and for obvious reasons, it has taken me a while to recuperate from that.  The all-nighter with a sick camper sure didn't help that exhaustion either...but I digress.

In the throws of baseball season, Alex has been away quite a bit lately.  The opportunity to veg on girly TV has been nice, but I do miss having a husband, and the life of a sports widow can be lonely (especially overnight).  So, when Alex is in town, I'm at the ball park volunteering (RE:  #10 on 20 in 14) or we're scrambling to keep the house/bills/taxes/etc in order.

In the little time that's left, I have been working on some fun personal projects.  One of those has been becoming an independent consultant for Jamberry Nails.  Ever heard of Jamberry?  I hadn't either until a friend invited me to her Facebook party back in February.  I never paint my nails because they chip instantly it seems, and while the gel polish looks great, it is so damaging.  The fix for these issues?  Jamberry!

Jamberry nails are actually nail wraps (think decals) that stick on your natural nail and last for 2-3 weeks (or 4-6 on toes!) without the damaging effects of gels.  Hallelujah! They also happen to have tons of super cute design options, and the cost is totally reasonable, too.  Hesitant to put money into something I hadn't actually seen on person (remember, Facebook party), I didn't end up buying anything that week.  However, the consultant who hosted the party offered to send me a couple of samples to try at home.  Instantly, I was hooked!

And here we are, just a few weeks later...I'm officially a consultant!  So anyway, I would love for you to head over to Facebook and "Like" my consultant page to find out more about Jamberry.  I plan to host online parties (and in person ones, when feasible) and hope some of you will fall in love with the product just like I did.  You can also e-mail me anytime with questions, and I'll be glad to answer them for you!

But that's not all folks...

As I mentioned before, I am in the process of renaming this blog and freshening things up around here with a brand new design and layout.  I've also slowly been working to add tags to my posts, and hope to get things a little more organized.  In fact, I'll share a sneak peak with you today!

Drum roll......

There it is, a sneak peak at what will hopefully be fun and exciting things to come!  With all that said, please be patient with me around here.  I am not giving up on the blog, but I may be posting a little less frequently than I have lately.  My hope is that goal #1 on 20 in 14 will keep me accountable for posting at least once a week (and maybe even more!).

Thanks for all the support and please stay in touch!

7 Quick Takes Friday (vol. 5)

Not a ton of motivation for any type of significant post, and it happens to be Friday, so here we go!

Wednesday, I was all set to throw together a short post about my Ash Wednesday musings, but then I left Mass and spent the evening at baseball, and by the time I got home at 10 p.m., that obviously wasn't happening.  The abridged version goes a little something like this:  Growing up, we were always off of school/work on Ash Wednesday and during Holy Week.  These days it feels a bit sacrilegious to treat them as regular days.  But then again, it seemed a bit easier to spend the day fasting with work distractions instead of sitting at home eyeing the pantry and dwelling upon my commitment not to opening it.  Then...I got to Mass and the priest went on about how there are so many "holidays" on our standard calendars (days celebrating history, important people, etc), yet some of the holiest (and thus most important) days are left off of the calendar.  Welp, there went my previous sentiments...right out the window.  So yeah...tell me again why we have to keep regular schedules on Ash Wednesday and during Holy Week?

I'm still fighting that crud I mentioned before.  Poor Alex has been suffering with me and my coughing spasms all night for almost two weeks now.  Yesterday, he made me promise I'd "take care of it" by the time he returned from this weekend trip to Birmingham.  So, with a different doctor appointment scheduled for the afternoon, I decided to take a whole "sick" day, and see a doctor about the cold too.  $15 bucks and 30 minutes later, I was sent home with instructions to buy a bottle of Delsym and call back on Monday if I wanted something stronger.  Gee, thanks.

So yeah, doctors.  I've had four appointments in the last three weeks, which means I am taking good notes for my eventual post regarding item #18 on "20 in 14."  There are some other items from the list (1, 6, 10...) that are also in progress so hopefully I'll be able to update on something before too long.

This is totally random and I don't think there are any boys reading this, so I am just going to go ahead and say it.  Did you know that a woman's body temperature rises for about a week or so before her her period, and then...wait for it...drops significantly the day before or day it starts?  I've been charting for 18 months now and for some reason I only recently realized this super nifty little indicator.  For a girl who has spent 15 years (wow, old much?!) having not the slightest clue when she would begin menstruating (could be 28 days, could be 80 - ya never know!), this is a BIG development in my life.  Thanks, NFP!  (And if you aren't charting for whatever reason, I highly encourage it...even if you are totally single and not at all thinking about babies.  Just knowing when to expect this "visitor" is enough to ring the bells in my book!)

I had full intentions of being completely productive from home today, but of course that didn't happen.  Instead of designing a March newsletter for work (because, hello...we're already a week into the month), I ended up spending the day fighting my phone and it's recently diagnosed seizure disorder (go with it, laugh!).  Those two doctor visits took up a chunk of time, and then I tried to knock out that whole expiring driver's license thing but failed miserably because WHO CARRIES CASH THESE DAYS??  Seriously, people, we are in the year 2014!  And now, it's nearly 5 p.m. and I'm sort of having this mini anxiety attack (blogging helps, yes?) about how today is the deadline to register for this national conference I need to attend, or else the price is going to jump by at least $100 bucks...sheesh.  (So hey, Dawn...text me...e-mail me...something! Are we going, or what??)

Anybody ever heard of Jamberry nails?  An acquaintance invited me to her Facebook party a few weeks ago and I was instantly intrigued, but didn't want to dish out the dough for something I'd never actually seen in person.  Her awesome consultant sent me some samples and I think I might be hooked.  I'm thinking about joining as a consultant ("pyramid scheme," as some affectionately call it) and then trying to convince all of you how Jamberry is awesome and you should buy them too.  Sounds fun, right?

And that brings me to the last item on this list...this here blog.  For several months I have been thinking about wanting to make some big changes around here, starting with the name.  I'll try to save more rambling for another day, but the jist of it is that I want to keep learning and growing as a blogger, and I feel like a name change is one step in that process.  As of bedtime last night, I finally have a couple of names that are actually feasible (because that was the biggest hurdle so far).  I'd like others' input though.  SO, how should I do this?  Put a poll on my page?  Send out e-mails?  Call up a couple of my IRL friends?  Part of me wants to keep the names a secret until I'm ready for the reveal, but it's in my nature to need confirmation from others...so what's a girl to do?

Alright, that's it!  Sorry to be so wordy (and pictureless), but I had a lot to say and nothing to say all at the same time.  Funny how that works.

Have a great weekend, everyone!
-Lauren

A Nomination

I keep hearing about how the blogging community is such a kind and supportive one, and I am slowly paving my way into it.  As I mentioned in my Cara Box reveal post, one of my partners has a blog that's quite popular among the CrossFit crowd.  While Ace and I have very different audiences, it's been fun to get to know one another, and I appreciate her willingness to share her knowledge of blogging.

Ace was recently nominated for the Leibster Award, which is kind of a pay-it-forward type of honor, where baby blogs (baby as in # of followers, not actual children) are recognized and given the chance to get to know other baby bloggers.  In turn, Ace nominated me for a Leibster Award too.  Keep reading for my own nominations...

But first, I'm going to share a little more about myself, per Ace's request.

1. Most embarassing moment?
I've racked my brain and can't think of anything terribly interesting.  Friends, feel free to (gently) remind me of something I'm sure to have blocked from memory...

2. Favorite recipe?
Homemade salsa/guac.  Mmmmmmmm.

3. Item of clothing you feel most confident in and why?
Don't laugh...cute underwear.  Plain, fitted t-shirts (not graphic or printed tees) paired with cardigans.  Honestly, I'm more comfortable when my top is covered up, and I'm really starting to avoid v-necks and some swoop necks.  It's all about modesty and appropriateness.

4. What do you do to relax?
Blog!  Duh.  (Vegging on the couch with DVR and/or the husband is a close second.)

5.  If you could choose anywhere in the world to spend a week, where would it be?
On a cruise ship.  To anywhere, it doesn't matter.

6.  Favorite beer?
Woodchuck, preferably on draft.  Ciders, in general.

7. Least favorite way to sweat?
Just by being outside.  I'm talking about the Louisiana heat where stepping out your front door is enough to produce sweat-filled clothing that could literally be wrung out when twisted like a wash rag.  Movement induced sweat is acceptable...not that shiz.

8. Would you rather:  Have to wear 80s style blazers with shoulder pads every day for the rest of your life OR wear Lady Gaga's meat dress once a week for the rest of your life?
Uh, the blazers, please.

9.  Quote you live by?
Laissez les bon temps rouler!  (I couldn't resist.)

10.  Favorite color and why?
Red.  Does this even need an explanation?  Everything that is awesome in life is red...especially paired with white, black, or gray.

11. Who would play you in the movie of your life?
The sarcastic chick from Two Broke Girls.  Not because we're alike or anything (except for maybe our height/busts)...mostly because I secretly wish I were as quick witted as she is.  P.S.  Alex and I refer to the show as "Two Broke Bitties," or just, "Bitties," for short.  Love that show.

More about the Leibster Award:  The Leibster Award is given to up and coming bloggers who have less than 200 followers.  What exactly is a Leibster?  Leibster is German and means favorite or beloved!  The Leibster is a great way to share with the community and get to know other bloggers!

So, my nominations (in alphabetical order).  More than half of those on this list are friends of mine IRL (in real life).  I love following their blogs and want to do what I can to help promote them.  Please check these ladies out (and stay a while, if you like what you see)!

  1. Ashley @ Coffee Happens
  2. Liz @ Gray Area
  3. Jen @ Into Your Will
  4. Janine @ Home Joys & Other Pleasantries
  5. Kristina @ Loving & Living
  6. Molly @ Moments of Clairety
  7. Lauren @ Our Family AdMyers
  8. Christina @ Tales of Life, Love, and Ice Cream
  9. Lendy @ The Dashboard Diaries
  10. Christy @ Traveling Soul

For the nominees, here are the rules:
  • Answer the questions I set for you, then create 11 questions for those you nominate.
  • Choose 11 people to nominate and link them in your post.
  • Notify your nominees.
  • No tag-backs!

The questions:
1. When did you start your blog?
2. Why did you start your blog?
3. What motivates you to continue writing?
4. How many different blogs do you follow?
5. What is your favorite book?
6. Do you have a nickname?
7. What's the last movie you watched?
8. Which sports teams do you cheer for?
9. Item of clothing you feel most confident in and why?
10. Least favorite way to sweat?
11. What do you do to relax?

So what are you waiting for??  Nominees - go, do it!  Everyone else - check out some of the awesome bloggers I nominated!

Have a good one, ya'll!

My First Cara Box

Back in December I signed up to participate in the Cara Box Exchange, a monthly box swap hosted by Kaitlyn at Wifessionals.  The three month exchange offers women the chance to be matched with others who may have similar interests, locations, or stages of life.  Previously, the Cara Box Exchange centered around blogging, with the format designed around a "link-up." This round, the exchange was changed to align with Instagram, instead.

I will say, I a little leery of signing up for a Cara Box with the new Instagram format.  By and large, I am not (or wasn't then, anyway) a regular Instagram user, and I wondered how it would be possible to really get to know someone by looking at pictures of their pet or what they had for dinner.  As it turned out, I was mostly right.  It was difficult to learn about what someone would enjoy receiving in a box of encouragement, simply by seeing pictures of their day-to-day routine.

However, both of my matches (sender and receiver) were willing to correspond via e-mail and that helped a lot.  I ended up being the one who failed to correspond in a timely manner (yeah, yeah...refer to Goal #7). It was also fun to become a regular follower of my sender's blog.

But the most exciting part of all was receiving my Cara Box...duh!!  What did I receive, you ask?  Let me show you!

She's so silly!

Isn't this the most adorable shoe box you've ever seen??
It actually has a pull tab to open!

Contents:  a notebook (for keeping track of all my blog ideas!), colored pencils (in case I'm thinking in color, haha), note cards (so I can thank all my lovelies, of course), a huge bag of Orbit (because it's awesome), lifesavers mints (can never have enough of these), an assorted pack of strawberry LipSmackers (it is blustery cold, after all), Grandma Nancy's rosary (how special!), and a sweet note of encouragement.

The "for kids" part made me laugh!

Grandma Nancy's rosary is by far my favorite item from the entire box...and the note, of course!  Such a sweet, sweet note.

I guess I should have shared a little more about my matches.  This round, all matches were made by state of residence.  This is why I wanted to sign up in the first place - my goal was to meet new people in the area (remember how I feel like I have no friends nearby?), and meeting new bloggers would be a great two-for-one deal!

Jessica, a 29 year old from Walker, LA was the recipient of my box.  She enjoys reading, hockey and football, and runs a tanning salon.  In her box, she received nail polish, cookie butter, chapstick, hand sanitizer, hot chocolate, and tea.  (Hope you liked it, JBFox!)

Aislinn ("Ace"), a 26 year old grad student at LSU was the sender of my box.  She's a fitness machine who happens to have an up-and-coming blog and has been a great mentor to me with my own blog.  I'm SO grateful for all she has taught me over the last few months, and I look forward to learning more as time goes on.  THANKS a BUNCH for all the goodies you sent, and I can't wait to collaborate again on future blog efforts!

That's all for now.
-Lauren

20 in 14

It may be nearing the end of January, but the year is still young and I have decided to share a list of goals for the year.  In keeping with the "2014" theme, I decided to include 20 goals in 5 categories for the year 2014.  I have never actually written down a list of goals for an entire year, so we'll see how this goes.

7 Quick Takes Friday (vol. 1)

Ya'll I'm a big girl blogger now!! Okay, not really...juuust kidding. I think this is what it means to "link up" and this is my very first time doing such a thing. Like whoa.

So this is called "7 Quick Takes Friday" (as if you didn't already know that by the obvious image included above).  Apparently lots of bloggers are on this bandwagon which involves a weekly post about seven random thoughts, ideas, or experiences relevant to the writer at that particular time. So here I am, diving into the big girl blogging world by trying it out for myself. I won't promise weekly "link ups" with #7QT, but I may try it every now and again.

Anyone else out there freezing their buns off? Oh yeah, just 75% of the country...oops. Brr, it's cold out there! While we are missing the brunt of what forecasters are calling "Cleon" (Oh, and when did people decide it was a good idea to "name" winter storms? Dumb.) I'm still quite grumpy about what she did to ruin our plans for a weekend trip to visit the bff in Dallas. Poor Dawn has visited me in almost every place I've lived (there have been quite a few), and the no-good, terrible, bad friend that I am has yet to return the favor. Dawn, two things: a) I owe you big, and b) for all that is good and mighty out there, pleeeease pick a fun, exciting, and NON-winter-weathery location for your next adventure! Mk, thanks!

I'm not giving up so easily with this rant against cold weather. With the rainy, gross, awfulness outside, I really just want to curl up in sweatpants with the husband and watch DVR all day. I've been fighting some icky crud (re: cough, sore throat, mucus) for almost a week now and I think warm and cozy would really do the trick. Thanks to our cancelled plans, I may get said wish...but only after dozing at my desk all day in the office. At least I get to blog in the mean time! ;-)

I realize I never write anything about our time in south Louisiana for Thanksgiving last weekend. For the most part, there was nothing noteworthy to share. Food, relaxation, and family could easily sum it up. I did manage to kick-tail for one round of ladder golf with Alex's new set.  (I would add a picture as evidence but my phone appears to be comatose; I hope you'll forgive me.)  That may have been the highlight of our weekend. The low point was definitely our unexpected 2 am drive back to Monroe following some irresponsible decisions on the part of his intern. I won't say much about that here, but feel free to inquire if you are so interested.

Speaking of ULM athletic (not really, but kind of), last week's win against the Ragin Cajuns carried the team to officially bowl-eligible status, which means the plans we FINALLY made for our holidays have been placed on hold again. Ugh. By Sunday we should know more, but I am definitely not ashamed to say I'm crossing my fingers for the bowls to fill up quickly...without any Warhawks on the list.

Umm...Christmas is almost here. What? A grand total of 19 sleeps before the big day. I guess I really ought to get back to working on selecting and designing gifts. To make matters slightly more stressful, I know Alex went all out on a gift for our anniversary, and my ideas just don't seem like they will measure up. I really just need to buckle down and make it happen.

While everyone is busy posting pictures of their christmas tree or holiday decorations, our little home is feeling a big neglected. We don't have any holiday decorations, and Alex and I disagree on Christmas tree philosophies, which means our house mostly looks the same as it would in June (give or take an extra blanket or two). He says I can buy some holiday decorations after they go on sale in January, so maybe next year we'll have a little something. I don't see either of us budging on the tree thing, though, so we may be treeless for life. Just call us the Grinch House, I'll understand.

So, what is everyone else up to on this chilly Friday?

11 Times the Thanks

Tomorrow is the official 11 month mark for Alex and I's marriage.  Just yesterday he commented about how exactly 11 months ago we were enjoying an evening with family and friends at Walk-On's Bistreaux & Bar in Lafayette, followed by Cajun dancing lessons and a night filled with shenanigans (cue bachelor/ette party memories).  The following night, we enjoyed a delicious Cajun dinner at Prejean's Restaurant, and the night after that, well...you know.  So much greatness packed into one extended weekend!

In honor of this Thanksgiving holiday, I thought it was appropriate to make a quick list of 11 (for 11 months) things I'm thankful for in this first year of marriage.

1. Alex - Do I really even have to explain this one?  Without him, this list wouldn't exist!  Really though, it's been a fun year, all the way from opening gifts and putting together our house, to repairing what seems like monthly fix-it's around said house, to finally spending holidays together.  He's a good one and I'll leave it at that.

2. Our Home - I mentioned this above, but I'll expand on it.  Since we didn't live together (or even in the same state, for that matter), it's been a special experience to build our home together.  It's the perfect size for us, and nestled in a quaint little neighborhood with just the right amount of space for our trio of furbabies.  Regardless of where we settle or how many times we move between now and then, our first home will always hold special memories for us.

3. Our Jobs - I whine about these a lot, but ultimately we are really very blessed in this department.  Alex is one of the youngest in his position for comparable programs across the country, and I am SO proud of him for working his tail off to make that happen (while moving across the country for me, I might add).  In my heart I dream about the day where I can stay home with a growing family, but in the meantime, I have landed not one but two (think my previous job in AR) jobs I once only dreamed of.  It's fun to work for an organization that has been in my life for nearly 20 years, and we are very blessed to have the resources to live comfortably at such a young age.

4. Proximity - Again, after spending two years (the entirety of our pre-marriage relationship) doing the long distance thing, it is soooooooooooooooo nice to be past that season of our lives.  Seeing each other almost daily, enjoying meals together, and just sharing our lives in person is a-mazing.  In this category, I include the joys of proximity to my family.  Living where we do now has cut my travel time to home in half, and as a result we have been able to see my family on a much more regular basis.

5. Furbabies - Animals are really not "my thing," especially dogs...but I did inherit a "stepdog" when we got married.  Including my beta fish and the two kittens we adopted in April, these days our "wee" count is up to four.  The wees, as we call them, provide daily entertainment as well as that always-appreciated unconditional love.  In this next year, we hope to grow the family even more with another wee...of the human variety, that is.

6. Photos/Video - Thanks to our photographer and videographer, we have some awesome footage from our wedding season.  It's pretty incredible to look back over everything and relish in those moments we shared with our closest family and friends.  Sometimes we find ourselves watching video footage on repeat for an entire evening.  And you know what, I'm not embarrassed to admit that either.

7. Visitors - Expanding on another topic mentioned previously, but I'm going with it.  Since we have so few friends in Monroe, having visitors is very special for us.  Mad props to my parents for visiting several times, as well as Dawn and Jen/Logan. We love our house (see above, lol) and enjoy hosting others; unfortunately, we don't get to do that on a regular basis so come visit us, people!

8. Travel - Alex and I both travel for work regularly, but it's not the same as when we are able to travel together.  In this year, we have visited his family in North Carolina twice with another trip in the works for Christmas.  We went to Dallas in June, and if all goes well, we'll be back there again next weekend to visit Dawn.  Now that a bowl game for ULM is out, we're also looking at doing a road trip through western NC and TN or GA for our anniversary.  We definitely have the travel bug and I hope it stays that way!

9. Mexican food - Random, and just a little silly, but it's kind of ridiculous how often Alex and I eat Mexican food of some variety.  Tortillas heated with shredded cheese (we call them "quesadillas"), enchiladas, fajitas, chips and guac...the whole deal.  We are Mexican-eating machines!  So maybe I need to branch out a little, but hey, it works.

10. Smart phones - It seems I was the last person on the planet to get a smart phone, but I totally love having one now.  More specifically, I love the android platform and Google Play is so easy to navigate.  Of course, we all need to take a break every now and again but I am definitely grateful for finally having an accurate built-in GPS system, and picture messaging has officially taken me out of the dark ages.

11. Blogging - These days, blogging gets me really excited.  It's a slow process for me but I am really interested in soaking up all there is to know about graphic design, building a page, and increasing marketability/readership.  I won't claim to be the next big thing, but I would like to continue learning an toying around with all things blog-related.  It's really become a fun hobby for me and I hope to keep it up for many years to come.

Okay, so much for a "quick" list...sorry about that.  I really should quit pretending that I'll ever be able to write concisely.  Ah well.  In any case, ya'll eat a lot, pray a lot, and make a lot of memories as you enjoy this turkey day.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Finally, a Facelift

For all my regular readers out there, you may have seen my last post about following this blog via BlogLovin. If you're someone who follows more than one or two blogs, but aren't yet using using BL (or some other Reader format), I highly suggest you try it.  Readers have made my blog-following experience so much easier and more meaningful.  So, yeah...check it out!

In that same vein, have you the seen face-lift on my blog?  Sometimes Readers don't show blogs in their original formats (especially if you use an app version), so I wanted to be sure and tell everyone about the new and improved "Breaking the Mold."  Instead of using one of those cookie cutter templates with backgrounds, images, and colors, I downloaded a new set from someone who designs custom templates.  Now, this particular template I'm using is not a custom template (I didn't pay for it), but it takes a lot of time and a bit of sweat on the brow to use this type of design.  If you can't tell yet, I'm SUPER excited about this big change to my five-year (and counting) blog!!!

In my quest to find outlets for creativity, personal expression, and general hobby-type ventures, I'm slowly learning how to improve my blogging and (maybe eventually) increase readership.  I have to give mad props to Kara over at The Simple Life Blog for sharing some tutorials she's used along the way.  She's been a huge help in making the learning curve not so steep, and I really look forward to learning more and more as I work to up the ante on this here blog of mine.  Maybe one day we'll even be in the same "league" of blogs and then we can teach each other how to make fancy new projects for our pages.  A girl can dream, can't I? (Also thanks to Dawn and Christy for serving as reviewers as I ascertained the style/color combinations were clear and readable before this big reveal.)

Never fear, though.  I don't aspire to ever be one of those blogs with thousands of followers because let's be honest, no one wants to see give-aways, ads, or product reviews all day every day (and that's what's required to be at that level in the blog world).  Plus, that's not "me" anyway.  I just like recording stories and experiences so I can look back on them one day and smile about the many people and places who "moo-lded" me into the person I am today.

I might, however, try out a few blogger-style entries every now and again.  (Note:  This is your warning.)  Eventually, I want to learn about "linking up," creating buttons, and building an audience.  For now though, I'm going to stick to the basics and probably keep playing around with my page design before I move on to other things.  Lately, fonts, colors, and images are really intriguing to me, and even in my professional work, I'm trying to learn more about creating materials that are attractive to others in order to do a better job of growing our program.

So, what this all means is that I hope I'm finding a fun new hobby that will give me a creative outlet to feel connected with others in a different way.  For all you other bloggers out there (I know, I know, all... three of you? ha.), feel free to share tips and suggestions, or even tutorials that were helpful to you.  I'm like a sponge right now!

In other news, this was a really busy week for me.  The "fair" is in town where I work and given my line of work that means lots of activities that require coordinating volunteers and all those hundreds of details that go into executing events.  Plus, some super intelligent person (not!) decided it would be a grand idea to take all the 4-H agents out of their parishes for two days during the first week of the first month of club meetings and have them go to an overnight training session at 4-H Camp.  Genius, right?  I felt super anxious returning today to a mound of missed calls, e-mails, and list of things to do before three events we have tomorrow.  The only thing that makes the idea of working all day Saturday not totally depressing is that Alex is in North Carolina overnight for the ULM game against Wake Forest.  It would be that much worse if I had to work all day on Saturday while he sat at home alone or something.

I was on the team that was designated as "Overall Winner" of the Top Chef:  Healthy Tailgate event during our training this week.  We made crock-pot fajitas and they were totally yummmmmmm!

This is the office explosion that occured while I was out at training for two days.  Really, the photo doesn't do it justice.

Ok, enough of the pitty party.  Ya'll go check out my new and improved page, and let me know what you think!  While you're at it, go ahead and click the (super cute) buttons to follow me on BlogLovin, Twitter, and Facebook.  You're also welcome to leave a comment or send me an e-mail (because there are adorable buttons for that too!).

See ya, folks!

100 Favorite Memories and Lessons…

…from my first 100 blogs.

Almost four months later, the blog I have been working on since January is FINALLY here! Just as I went to begin my next blog, I realized I’d hit #99 and it just didn’t seem right to celebrate #100 with just “any old” blog entry. So, in honor of my 100th blog, I decided to reread the previous 99 entries I’ve written over the last 4 years, taking a few moments to reflect on each of them, and share some lessons I learned along the way. I apologize for the length (it’s over 8 pages in MS Word), but hope you’ll spend some time looking at where I’ve come from, and where I’ve been. And with that, I say…read on!

1. May 12, 2008 – It was my first blog, and my first commitment to document that would become an amazing journey through cross-country travel, living in four new states across three time zones, finishing two degrees, and ultimately, finding myself. Lesson 1: “Remember, no matter where you go, there you are.” –Confucius

2. May 13, 2008 – Starting the Child Life internship interview process, 10 applications, 4 interviews, and a world of possibility ahead of me. Lesson 2: Keep an open mind.

3. May 15, 2008 – Anxiously progressing through more interviews, articulating clear thoughts, and selling myself as a good choice for internship programs. Lesson 3: Phone interviews aren’t so bad – maybe even…better?

4. May 20, 2008 – Surviving the interviews and transitioning into the period of waiting. Lesson 4: Patience is a virtue, one with which most people struggle.

5. May 22, 2008 – An offer received. I was invited to do my internship in Boise, Idaho…finding out that my first choice was the best all along. Lesson 5: Dream big.

6. May 23, 2008 – The offer accepted. Attention turns toward Benjamin’s upcoming inaugural visit to Cajun Country, and the bittersweet ending to an amazing 3 years with my wonderful roommates. Lesson 6: The world never stops turning, it’s whether we choose to follow that makes the difference.

7. May 30, 2008 – “Living the life” and starting quite possibly the best summer ever. Lesson 7: Tumbleweeds may appear dry and alone, but in fact they’ve acquired miles of memories.

8. June 1, 2008 – First semi-solo road trip to a place that has literally become my “home away from home” (Camp Aldersgate, Little Rock, AR). Lesson 8: Everything comes full circle.

9. June 6, 2008 – Lovin’ life and the new experiences at this “common ground for extraordinary people.” Lesson 9: Cherish the moments; carry them in your heart forever.

10. June 9, 2008 – Appreciating others’ generosity, and singing praises for a home-cooked meal. Lesson 10: Hospitality is important. So is love - love your neighbors, love yourself.

11. June 10, 2008 – Enjoying the current experience yet forced to prepare for the next one. Lesson 11: Time flies.

12. June 12, 2008 – Making progress, looking forward to a short vacation to “The River City” (Memphis, TN). Lesson 12: Take advantage of opportunities; it won’t always be so convenient.

13. June 14, 2008 – Summarizing the first two weeks in Arkansas, “These kids, I tell ya…they will take your heart, run with it, and never give it back.” Lesson 13: I’m the lucky one.

14. June 17, 2008 – Thankful for the boys, and a nice stroll along the river with the other Cajun and a Bost Brother. Lesson 14: “A setting sun still whispers a promise for tomorrow.” - Jeb Dickerson

15. June 20, 2008 – Congratulatory comments to my baby bro for a job well done. Lesson 15: Notice the little things and always take a moment to show you care.

16. June 22, 2008 – Experiencing Little Rock nightlife, camping at the lake house, and snipe hunting adventures. Lesson 16: Something’s definitely “fishy” when a guy tries to leave you out in the middle of the woods with instructions to stand very still and wait for the swarm of birds to cross your path…

17. June 24, 2008 – In regard to Spina Bifida Camp, “This has been the hardest, worst, best, most glorious week of all.” Lesson 17: Accept the challenge, work hard, and celebrate the accomplishment.

18. June 29, 2008 – Nursing would never be my vocation, but I left Little Rock a changed person after that last week. Lesson 18: Seize the moment, step out of your comfort zone, and don’t be afraid to try something new.

22. July 24, 2008 – Camp songs, ‘nuff said. Lesson 22: Living in the “camp bubble” is special, and not to be tampered with.

23. August 11, 2008 – Reflections on my time as Teambuilding Instructor at Camp Bon Coeur; the kids learned a ton and I had a great time leading. Lesson 23: Kids learn during the summer too.

24. August 22, 2008 – Graduate Day at Nicholls was the last time that I’ve had an authentic chance to visit with some of my all-time favorite roommates, Annie and Jen. Lesson 24: “College friends become a kind of family - eating together, laughing, fighting, crying, and doing absolutely nothing together until you can't seem to remember how you ever lived your life without them in the first place."

25. August 26, 2008 – Excitement and anticipation for my first trip to Ohio, visiting good friends and touring potential graduate schools; little did I know, I wouldn’t return home for 4 months. Lesson 25: Take good-byes seriously, you never know when it’ll be your last.

26. August 26, 2008 – Storms are a brewin’…Hurricane Gustav sets his sight on Louisiana and I start to get just a bit nervous. Lesson 26: Hurricane parties are fun – evacuations are a pain in the @$$.

27. August 28, 2008 – Hurricane Gustav becomes a dirty word, and now I’m more than “a bit” worried about the logistical nightmare that is yet to come. Lesson 27: Someone ought to offer a course in understanding the airline industry.

28. August 31, 2008 - Officially declared: Hurricane Evacuee. Lesson Question 28: Why are airline tickets the only consumer items without built-in return policies?

29. September 15, 2008 – I survived (the wolves of graduate school searching, the wrath of Gustav, and the hospitality of Ohioans). Lesson 29: Decision-making is not my forte.

30. September 17, 2008 – Experiencing mmmmMICHIGAN (movies, Block and Bridle, touring a dairy, Michigan State University, late-night bowling, and a sunrise flight out of Detroit)! Lesson 30: “That state up north” ain’t so bad after all.

37. November 12, 2008 – Not one, but TWO, Cajun visitors (Dr. K & Mom) graced Boise with their presence; it was a great time showing off a city I’d of which I’d grown so fond, and spending time with two lovely ladies. 38. November 29, 2008 – Hosting another southern visitor (Chris from Georgia), and then my first Thanksgiving away from home. Lesson 38: Accept invitations from other families to share in the holiday season, and “do unto to others,” by returning the favor to others someday.

47. February 6, 2009 – Quick check in before heading off on another exciting adventure, the start of my stent as a tour guide in our nation’s capital. Lesson 47: It gets easier…usually.

53. April 13, 2009 – The madness continues, loving DC more than ever. Lesson 53: Springtime in DC is wild!

54. April 19, 2009 – Trapeez school (life balancing act) and a day trip to Baltimore. Lesson 54: There will always be tough times…sandwiched between great ones.

55: April 27, 2009 – Times are a changin’ in DC…successful tour group, roommates moving on, and an upcoming road trip for yet another grad school visit. Lesson 55: Relationship-building is the key that unlocks the doors of life.

56: May 6, 2009 – Road trippppppp!!! Lesson 56: Everyone should rent a car and take an impromptu road trip at some point in their lives – pack peanut butter and bananas, grab your beach towels and a good book, then hit the open road!

57. June 2, 2009 – Closing in on my DC departure, sharing quiet times with close friends, bidding housemates goodbye, welcoming new ones, and crossing things off the DC bucket list. Lesson 57: One can never “do it all;” there is always something new to see and do in the most powerful city in the world!!

58. June 2, 2009 – Concluding my time in DC with last-minute, new, and memorably historic experiences. Lesson 58: Always remember that with everything we do, we’re making history and paving the path for not only our future, but for those to come after us.

59. June 20, 2009 – Ten short days in my home state, with a quick turnaround as I head out to a second summer at Camp Aldersgate. Lesson 59: Louisiana will always be “home,” and I’ll forever miss it if I am not there.

60. June 24, 2009 – Settling in and starting what would become a great summer at my “home away from home.” Lesson 60: It’s always more fun to be the “veteran.”

62. July 31, 2009 – A little more time at home, beach vacation with the family, and attempts at maintaining long-distance friendships. Lesson 62: “Happiness is like peeing in your pants. Everyone can see it but only you can feel its warmth.” – Author Unknown

63. August 12, 2009 – Summaries from the second half of the summer, more goodbyes…and unknowingly, see-ya-later’s. Lesson 63: “Don’t Stop Believing.”

65. November 8, 2009 – A long-awaited and much needed return visit to Idaho!!!! Lesson 65: Do one thing every day that makes you happy…and when you really need it, take a whole weekend make it happen!!

100. Lesson 100: “We must be our own before we can be another's.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson

And so Emerson hit the nail on the head with that one – I could never be something to someone else without really knowing who I am. Lots of updates to share in upcoming blogs, but this quote truly said it all. I am who I am because of all of the experiences I’ve had, the people I’ve encountered, and the circumstances I’ve endured. These 99 (and now 100) blogs are glimpse into all that has molded me into the Lauren Nicole Mouton that exists as of May 6, 2012.

Tomorrow is a new day, and I have no doubt tomorrow, the next day, the one after that, etc., will continue to shape me into the one I will become. For now though, this is who I am, and I can’t wait to see who I’ll be. And with that I always say… I'm moving on to new and exciting adventures. Stay tuned!
